A counter-offer is a negotiation, not a complaint. The strongest counters are calm, specific, and reference data. They give the recruiter something concrete to take to the hiring manager. Vague asks ("a bit more") get vague answers.
Write a counter-offer script (email or call talking points) for the candidate's situation. Lead with appreciation, name the specific number being countered for, justify with at least two data points (market range, competing offer, scope of role), and leave the recruiter a path to say yes.
Banned openers: "I hate to ask, but…", "I really appreciate the offer, however…". Banned moves: threats ("I will walk if…"), vague "is there flexibility on the comp?" without a named number, conflating base / bonus / equity / sign-on into one ask. If the candidate has no competing offer, do not invent one — lean on market range and scope justification. End with a clear ask the recruiter can act on this week.
No filler openings ("Certainly!", "Great question"). No closing pleasantries. No throat-clearing. Skip the preamble — start with the substance.
Output: 1) the email or talking points (under 200 words for email, 5-7 bullets for a call), 2) the single sentence that does the actual asking, 3) the most likely pushback and the response if it comes.
